Overlays

Add GIFs, emotes and text to a Twitch clip

A reaction GIF at the right moment, the emote your chat spammed, a name over the play. Overlays are how a clip picks up the context a viewer scrolling past does not have.

Boltis is free. Boltis runs on Windows 10 and 11. Boltis does not add a watermark. Overlays live in the same editor as your layout and captions, so there is no second app to export into.

Overlay types

What can you add to a clip?

Five kinds of overlay, all in the Overlays panel of the editor.

GIFs

Search GIPHY from inside the editor, or pick from trending. Results are filtered to PG-13.

Twitch emotes

Your channel emotes and Twitch global emotes, animated ones included. Needs your Twitch account connected.

Text

Your own words in a choice of fonts and colours, with an outline or a coloured pill behind them.

Social callouts

A "Follow @yourhandle" pill in Twitch, YouTube, TikTok or Instagram colours.

Your images

Upload a PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF. Boltis keeps a copy so it is still there at export.

The workflow

How do you add a GIF to a Twitch clip?

  1. 1Open the clip in the Boltis editor and move the playhead to the moment you want.
  2. 2Open Overlays, search GIPHY on the GIFs tab, and click a GIF. It is added at the playhead.
  3. 3Drag it into position on the preview, and drag the corners to resize it.
  4. 4Drag its ends on the timeline to set when it appears and disappears.
  5. 5Pick an entrance and exit animation if you want one, then export.

Animation

Can overlays be animated?

Yes. Every overlay can have an entrance and an exit, chosen separately. With no animation it simply appears and disappears on its start and end times.

AnimationWhat it does
FadeFades in, fades out
PopScales up from small with a slight overshoot
Rise upSlides up into place
Slide from rightSlides in from the right edge
Spin inSpins and grows into place

The exit finishes exactly on the end time you set, so trimming an overlay to the frame still means what it says. The editor preview plays the animation the same way the export renders it.

Layers

How do you control which overlay is on top?

Overlays stack in the order listed in the panel, with the top of the list at the front. Move any overlay forward or backward, and the preview, the timeline and the export all follow the same order.

  • Bring forward or send backward one layer at a time
  • Select an overlay in the list to edit its animation
  • Delete one without touching the rest

Presets

Can you put the same overlay on every clip?

Yes. Overlays can be saved in a preset along with your layout and caption style. Every clip that preset formats gets them, including clips queued by a hotkey while you stream. A social callout or a channel logo is the obvious use.

The one thing a preset cannot do is time an overlay to a moment, because it does not know when the moment is. Preset overlays stay on screen for the whole clip. For a reaction GIF on the punchline, place it in the editor.

Worth knowing

Honest limits

  • Boltis runs on Windows 10 and 11. There is no Mac or Linux build.
  • GIF search needs an internet connection, and results come from GIPHY filtered to PG-13. Anything else, upload as your own file.
  • Twitch emotes load from your connected Twitch account. If Twitch is not connected, the emotes tab has nothing to show.
  • Overlays are images, GIFs and text. There is no video overlay, so you cannot place a second clip on top of the first.
  • Animations cover the entrance and the exit. An overlay does not move around the frame while it is on screen.
  • An overlay saved in a preset stays on screen for the whole of every clip that preset formats. Timing it to one moment still means placing it in the editor.
  • Uploaded files and GIFs are rendered into the exported video. You are responsible for having the rights to anything you add.

FAQ

Questions

How do you add a GIF to a Twitch clip?

Open the clip in the Boltis editor, go to Overlays, and search GIPHY on the GIFs tab. Click a GIF and it is added at the playhead. Drag it into position, set when it appears on the timeline, and export. The GIF is rendered into the video, with no watermark.

Can you add Twitch emotes to a clip?

Yes. The Emotes tab lists your channel emotes and Twitch global emotes, including animated ones, and you can search them by name. Your Twitch account needs to be connected.

Can you add text to a Twitch clip?

Yes. Type your text, pick a font and colour, and choose an outline or a coloured pill background. Drag the corners to resize it and double-click to edit the words.

Can you add your own image or logo?

Yes. Upload a PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF on the Uploads tab. Boltis copies the file so it is still available when the clip is exported.

Can overlays be animated?

Yes. Each overlay can have an entrance and an exit animation: Fade, Pop, Rise up, Slide from right or Spin in. The editor preview shows the animation exactly as it will export.

Are overlays free?

Yes. GIFs, emotes, text, social callouts and uploaded images are all part of the free editor, and the export has no watermark.

Can I put the same overlay on every clip?

Yes. Save the overlays as part of a preset, and every clip that preset formats gets them, including clips queued by a hotkey. A preset overlay stays on screen for the whole clip.

Do overlays still line up if I cut part of the clip?

Yes. Overlays are anchored to the moment you placed them on, so removing a section earlier in the clip does not shift them onto the wrong moment.

Put the joke on screen

Open a clip, search a GIF, drop in the emote chat was spamming, and export it vertical. Free, with no watermark.
